Summer is always the apt time for some boys to brave their lives’ biggest cut to manhood: circumcision. Last May 21, 2011, the Association of Biology Majors (ABM) through its socio-civic committee sponsored a tuli mission held in Krus na Ligas Barangay Hall, along Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, near the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman.
Ranging from nine to seventeen years old, exactly forty-five barangay male residents registered and were circumcised without fee.
ABM was grateful to have volunteers who are undergraduates from the UP Manila College of Medicine to perform most of the surgical procedures. They are also members of the Phi Kappa Mu fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta sorority, both recognized by the college. Other volunteers from the community were namely Bianca Gozun, Eunice Mercado, and Kristine Cabarte, among others. The barangay captain and his staff were also present to assist.
Most of the incoming seniors of ABM had the opportunity to circumcise, too, while working hand in hand with the medical students.
Painkillers, antibiotics, and allied medicines were given to the circumcised residents for free. Parents or guardians were advised concerning the proper hygiene for their newly circumcised sons or relatives.
This year’s tuli mission was only one of the many annual projects of ABM to continue its tradition of service as a socio-civic organization for more than thirty years.
